Our Story

Hong Kong craftsmanship.
A new chapter in San Diego.

Chinese Tailor began as a family business in Hong Kong in the 1990s, built on a love of the qipao and the skill of tailors who have devoted their working lives to the craft. In 2001, we launched chinesetailor.com, bringing made-to-measure qipaos to customers around the world.

Over two decades, we made dresses for weddings, tea ceremonies, proms, galas and evenings to remember. Customers returned for another qipao and introduced us to their friends, sisters and mothers.

In 2020, the pandemic paused our online service. Our family later moved to San Diego, while our workshop stayed in Hong Kong. Then former customers began writing to ask:

“Would you make a dress for me again?”

So we reopened—with the same tailors, the same hand-cut, hand-sewn craftsmanship, and personal service from our new home in California. The customer reviews shared on this site come from those earlier years: a record of relationships we are proud to continue.

Today, we pair the qipao’s timeless silhouette with modern fabrics. Each dress is made to your measurements, for women of every background, size and height—and for the occasions that matter to you.

Welcome back if you know us. And if you’re discovering us for the first time, we’d love to make something special for you.

Experienced hands. Individual attention.

The craft is in the details

A qipao asks a great deal of its tailor. The way the collar sits, the shaping through the body, the placement of the closures, and the finish at each edge all affect the final dress.

Our experienced Hong Kong tailors bring that understanding to every garment. Each qipao is hand-made to your measurements, combining the character of the style you choose with the fabric you love.

Careful measurements are the starting point. Our step-by-step guide helps you take and save them, and you can add optional fit photographs to help our tailor understand your shape.

A classic form. A contemporary expression.

A qipao that feels like you

We love the qipao’s distinctive silhouette—and the way a modern fabric can change its mood. Abstract prints, expressive florals and fresh geometric patterns offer a different way to wear it.

Our 12 qipao photographs are your guide to the styles. The fabrics in those photographs are no longer available, so choose your dress fabric from our current stock collection. Your chosen stock fabric is included in the dress price.
